Quick answer

The cost of a WhatsApp AI agent has five parts. Setup, paid once, which covers configuring the platform, writing the knowledge base and testing. The customer service platform's monthly fee, which is where the agent runs. Meta's charges, per template message sent, while replies to people who messaged you in the last 24 hours are free. AI model usage, when the platform passes that cost on to you. And maintenance, which means reading conversations and updating what the agent knows. If you only answer people who reach out, you pay Meta very little. If you send reminders and campaigns, you pay for each message. I build my clients' agents on Renv Chat, where AI usage is already included in the plan.

The five parts of the cost

If you search for what a WhatsApp AI agent costs, you'll find a huge range, from free to several thousand dollars a month. The range is wide because each quote bundles different things into one number. One includes setup and another doesn't, one already counts Meta's charges and another leaves them for later. Once you split it into the five parts, you can compare two quotes and know what you'll pay in the first month and every month after.

What the cost of a WhatsApp AI agent is made of

Before going through each part, one thing changes the whole math. This kind of agent runs on the official WhatsApp API, the version Meta built for businesses that get a lot of messages, which works inside a platform on your computer. How it differs from the WhatsApp Business app, and when it's worth switching, is in the guide to WhatsApp customer service for business.

Setup, what you pay once

Setup gets the agent ready to talk to your clients. It's the part that varies most between quotes, because it depends on how much work goes into each step.

  1. Platform configuration. Connecting the number to the official API, creating the columns on the conversation board, your team's logins and the link to your calendar
  2. Knowledge base. Writing what the agent knows, like services, prices, length of each appointment, address, insurance, payment methods and the questions you get most, answered the way you'd answer them
  3. Script. Deciding what the agent asks before giving a price, when it books on your calendar and when the conversation goes to you
  4. Template messages. Writing the reminder, the confirmation and the follow-up for people who went quiet, and sending them to Meta for approval
  5. Testing. Talking to the agent from another number, trying questions outside the script, typos and discount requests, until it stops getting things wrong

The knowledge base is the step that matters most for the result. When information is missing, the AI tries to guess, and that's when it makes up a price or promises something you don't do. What to write in it is in How to add AI to WhatsApp Business.

For my clients, this whole setup is the work I do on Renv Chat, from connecting the number to Meta's API to the last test. If someone else or another platform handles it, ask whether there's an onboarding fee on top of the plan, because some platforms charge one.

The customer service platform's monthly fee

The platform is the software the agent lives in. It holds the conversations, the board with each client, the history, your team's logins and the AI agent itself. Each platform has its own pricing, and what usually changes the price is how many people answer, how many contacts you have, how many AI agents run at once and which features are included, like calendar booking, bulk messages and connections to other systems.

On the platform, each person on your team has their own login to the same number.

The platform I use, Renv Chat

I use Renv Chat on my own WhatsApp, where Marina answers, and it's where I build my clients' agents. It connects your number to Meta's official API and brings together in one place what a business that runs on appointments uses to answer clients.

  • An AI agent answering 24 hours a day, working from the documents, PDFs and FAQs you give it, and handing the conversation to a person with the full history when needed
  • A calendar synced with Google Calendar, so the appointments the agent books show up on your calendar
  • A stage board, with each client on a card you drag from one column to the next, from first contact to payment
  • Several people on the same account, with queues, departments and conversations assigned automatically
  • Conversation flows built by dragging blocks, actions triggered by keywords, tags or events, and message sequences
  • Automatic replies to Instagram DMs and comments
  • Bulk messages to groups of contacts filtered by tag, scheduled for the time you choose

Two things about Renv Chat affect the cost directly. AI usage is included in the plan, with no charge per message or per token, and the GPT-4o, GPT-4o Mini and GPT-5 Mini models are included, according to the Renv Chat website. And there's no contract, so you can cancel anytime. The plans show up when you sign up, and the yearly plan costs less than paying month to month.

If you want to look around the platform before you decide, signing up through my Renv Chat referral link gets you 3 days free to try it. You pay the monthly fee directly to the platform, without going through me, and the account stays in your business's name.

If you're comparing other platforms, check each pricing page for three things. Whether the plan is billed per user, whether AI agents are included or sold as an add-on, and whether the monthly price shown assumes you pay for the whole year.

What Meta charges per message

According to Meta's developer pricing page, since July 1, 2025, Meta has charged per template message delivered. A template is a message written and approved in advance, which you use to start or restart a conversation. Each template falls into a category, marketing, utility or authentication, and the rate depends on the category and on the recipient's country.

If you only answer people who reach out, you pay Meta almost nothing.

What's free, according to the same page, is what happens most in a business that runs on appointments.

  • A regular reply to someone who messaged you in the last 24 hours

    Does Meta charge?
    No
  • A utility template, like a confirmation, sent within those 24 hours

    Does Meta charge?
    No
  • Any message in the 72 hours after someone reaches out through an ad that opens WhatsApp

    Does Meta charge?
    No
  • A reminder sent the day before to someone who hasn't messaged you in over 24 hours

    Does Meta charge?
    Yes, as a utility template
  • A promotion, an open-calendar announcement or a message to someone who went quiet weeks ago

    Does Meta charge?
Yes, as a marketing template, the most expensive category
When Meta charges and when it doesn't, under the rules as of October 2026

In practice, an agent that answers people who reach out costs you little or nothing with Meta. The cost shows up when you message people on your own, like the next-day reminder or a campaign to your client list. To estimate it, count how many reminders you send each month and how many campaigns you plan to run, and multiply by Meta's rate for each category in your country.

What the AI model costs

The agent writes using an AI model, like the ones from OpenAI, Google or Anthropic. These providers charge for the amount of text the model reads and writes, and each conversation uses a little. Platforms handle this in two ways.

  • Usage included in the plan, sometimes with a monthly cap on messages or credits. Once you hit the cap, you buy more
  • Your own key, when you connect your account with the AI provider to the platform and pay the provider directly

On Renv Chat, AI usage is part of the plan, with no charge per message or per token, so this part doesn't grow when more people message you. That covers the AI model. Meta's charge for template messages, explained in the previous section, still applies on any platform connected to the official API, Renv Chat included.

Maintenance, the cost that keeps going

An AI agent nobody keeps an eye on starts getting things wrong within a few weeks. Prices change, a new service comes in, holiday hours are different, and every week a question shows up that it didn't know how to answer. Each of these needs to go into the knowledge base.

Every week a new question shows up that needs to go into the training.
  • Read the week's conversations and mark where the agent got stuck or answered wrong
  • Add the new questions to the knowledge base, with the right answer
  • Update prices, hours and services whenever something changes in your business
  • Review the template messages when Meta changes a category or rejects a text
  • Check the numbers on the board, how many people reached out, how many booked and how many were left waiting for you

With Marina, who answers my WhatsApp, I set one rule that cuts maintenance a lot. If someone doesn't answer the same question twice, the conversation comes to me, instead of the AI asking again. That prevents stuck conversations and shows me, every week, where the script needs adjusting.

You can handle maintenance on your own, with about an hour a week, or include it as a monthly service from whoever built the agent. Without it, the agent starts getting new questions and changed information wrong.

What makes the cost go up or down

  • How many people answer alongside the agent. Almost every platform charges per user
  • Calendar connection. Booking against your open slots takes more setup work than just answering questions
  • How many reminders and campaigns you send. Each one is a template message Meta charges for
  • How many services and rules the agent needs to know. A bigger knowledge base takes longer to write and test
  • Connections to other systems, like payments, patient records or a client database
  • More than one agent, like one to book appointments and another to follow up on unpaid invoices

The cost goes down when you start small, with an agent that answers the questions you get most, books on your calendar and passes everything else to you. Reminders, campaigns and integrations come later, once you know how many conversations come in each month.

Is there a free WhatsApp AI agent?

Meta has an AI agent inside the WhatsApp Business app itself. On the agent's official page, checked in October 2026, Meta says it answers questions about your business, recommends products and services and hands chats to you, and that it's available to eligible businesses in select markets. The product page says nothing about a calendar, but the WhatsApp Help Center explains how to connect Google Calendar from the mobile app so it can book appointments. It's free every month up to a response limit, and past the limit you subscribe to Meta One, according to the Meta One page for WhatsApp Business.

Whether it's really free, for how long and what it can't do compared to an agent on a platform is in Is the WhatsApp Business AI agent free?.

What to ask before you hire someone

With these questions, two quotes that looked very different become easy to compare.

  1. What's included in setup? A knowledge base written by the person building it, the calendar connection, template messages and how many rounds of testing
  2. Whose name is the platform account in? If it's in the builder's name, ask what happens to your number and history if you switch providers
  3. Are Meta's charges included or billed separately?
  4. How is AI usage billed? Included in the plan with a cap, or through your own key
  5. Is maintenance included? Who reads the conversations and updates the knowledge base, and how often
  6. When does a conversation go to a person? And how do you find out someone is waiting
  7. Does the number use Meta's official API? Software that mimics WhatsApp Web is cheaper at first and can get your number banned

If you want to try it before talking to anyone, signing up for Renv Chat through my link gets you 3 days free. If you'd rather get the agent ready to go, with your number on Meta's API, the knowledge base written and your calendar connected, I handle the implementation through the WhatsApp AI assistant. And since people reach the agent from Google and from your website, if your website doesn't send people to WhatsApp yet, read What a professional website needs.
