Quick answer
There are two ways to add AI to WhatsApp Business today. The first is Meta's own AI agent, which you turn on inside the app, under Tools, and which is free for now. The second is an AI assistant built on a platform connected to the official WhatsApp API, which works with your calendar, follows your script and hands the conversation to you when needed. The first handles simple questions. The second takes care of everything from the first hello to the booked appointment.
Why so many people are adding AI to WhatsApp
If you sell a service, you get the same questions all day. Do you have an opening tomorrow, how much is it, do you take my insurance, where are you located. And the message comes in while you're with a client, driving or asleep. Someone who asks at 10 PM and only hears back in the morning has often already booked with someone else.
AI takes care of exactly that part. It answers the questions that are always the same right away, and leaves you only what really needs you.
Option 1, Meta's AI agent
Meta added an AI agent inside the WhatsApp Business app itself. It was introduced under the name Business Agent in June 2026, at a Meta conference in London. It answers questions about your business, recommends items from your catalog and hands the conversation over to you whenever you want.

How to turn it on
- Update WhatsApp Business on your phone
- Check that the feature has reached your country and the language your app is set to, because Meta releases it gradually
- Add at least one item to your catalog
- Open Tools and look for the AI option for businesses
- Follow the steps and write what the agent is allowed to answer
- Test it by messaging from another number before you leave it on
Why my WhatsApp doesn't have the AI option
It's released gradually, account by account. If the option doesn't show up, check that the app is up to date, that the feature is available in your country and language, and that you have an item in your catalog. If it still doesn't show up, wait a few days, because there's no way to ask for early access.
What it costs
For now it's free. Meta has already said the agent will become part of its paid subscriptions in the coming months, without announcing a price yet.
Button bot or AI, what's the difference
A lot of people search "how to add a bot to WhatsApp Business" when what they want is AI, and the two are different things. A button bot sends a menu, like "type 1 to book, 2 for prices", and follows a fixed path. AI understands the question the way the person wrote it, typos included, and answers with your information.
How the person talks
- Button bot
- Picks a number from the menu
- AI
- Writes the way they normally would
Question outside the menu
- Button bot
- Gets stuck or repeats the menu
- AI
- Answers, if you taught it
How it feels to the person
- Button bot
- Talking to a machine
- AI
- Talking to a front desk
Setup
- Button bot
- Simpler
- AI
- Needs training with your answers
| Button bot | AI | |
|---|---|---|
| How the person talks | Picks a number from the menu | Writes the way they normally would |
| Question outside the menu | Gets stuck or repeats the menu | Answers, if you taught it |
| How it feels to the person | Talking to a machine | Talking to a front desk |
| Setup | Simpler | Needs training with your answers |
Option 2, an AI assistant on a platform
Here your number moves out of the regular app and onto the official WhatsApp API, which is Meta's version built for businesses that get a lot of messages. A customer service platform connects to it, and the AI assistant lives inside that platform.

The difference from Meta's agent is what it can reach outside the conversation.
- Books on your real calendar, checking your open slots
- Follows your script, with the questions you ask before giving a price
- Sends reminders before the appointment, and follow-ups to people who went quiet mid-conversation
- Organizes every conversation on a board, from people who just reached out to people who booked
- Lets more than one person answer on the same number, each on their own computer
- Hands it to you when the conversation needs a person, with a summary of what was already said
The cost is the platform's monthly fee, plus setting up and training the assistant. Your number goes through an approval process with Meta, which has its own timeline and doesn't depend on whoever sets it up. Until it comes through, your WhatsApp keeps working as usual.

Which one to choose

- Start with Meta's agent if you get only a few messages a day and just want to stop answering the same question about hours and address
- Go with a platform if you lose people because you take too long to reply, if your calendar depends on WhatsApp conversations, or if more than one person answers
- Go with a platform too if you want to follow up with people who went quiet, remind clients of their appointment or know how many conversations turned into clients
What to write so the AI doesn't make up answers
AI answers with what you taught it. When information is missing, it tries to guess, and that's when it makes up a price or promises something you don't do. Before you turn it on, write these five lists.

- The ten questions you get most, with the answer the way you'd give it
- Services, prices and how long each takes, or the rule for when not to share prices over messages
- Hours, address and payment methods
- What it's not allowed to answer, like diagnoses, discounts and sensitive topics
- When to hand it to you, like complaints, discount requests or questions it doesn't know
The mistakes I see most
- Turning on the AI without saying what it can't answer. It makes up prices and timelines when it doesn't know
- Not telling people it's an automated assistant. They feel tricked when they figure it out
- No handoff to you. Complaints and sensitive cases need a person
- Never reading the conversations. Every week a new question comes up that needs to go into the training
- Using unofficial software that mimics WhatsApp Web. Meta bans the number, and you lose everyone's contact
